If I was hosting a dinner party for 30 of the most amazing people alive or dead* Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson and Stephen Colbert would be getting an invitation. I hope watching this video will show you why.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is crazy smart but has no arrogance about him. He wants us all to share in and love knowledge and listening to him I have to agree. At one point in this video he describes being smart not as reciting a list of facts but being able to make connections and solve problems (kind of like MacGyver). Yes this resonates with me because I am not a fact-lister but also because there is some truth in that. Who would you rather in a crisis?
Colbert in his regular show challenges you to question what you see in the news. When I was little journalists were the epitome of truth, its why I considered being one. But with the invention of 24/7 news channels the content went from reporting to entertainment.
At 1:13:11 in the video they talk about how we can become more scientifically literate and I love his answer. It seems so obvious to let kids discover through playing but it can be hard. If you have spent the whole day vacuuming and a kid tramples dirt through its hard not to tell them off for it. But I have to try and remember that I am helping shape that persons response to learning by doing so. It will be hard and Richard will have to show me this video many times to remind me but I would like our children to grow up questioning things, it won’t be easy but it will make them better people.
*hmmm that could be an interesting conversation, who else would I invite to that dinner? I’ll come back to it later.
We are back! I hope you are well and life has been treating you to even just a little of the joy that we have had over the last few weeks.
I promise you will hear all about our adventures both from the wedding and our adventures in the US of A shortly. The 14+ hr flight has really done a number on us today but I wanted to say hi and to share this little video with you. It seemed appropriate somehow when we were watching it earlier today that I share it – since we just came back from the US and today we bought tickets to this.
The whole video just made me laugh so hard. Have a fabulous weekend
In honour of the fact that in 13 sleeps the newly minted Mr and Mrs Holz will be jetting off to Hawaii I felt I would share some Ukulele action with you. Love this song, I could listen to this over and over.
Sorry I’ve been bad at posting lately, life has gotten away from me a bit with the wedding and honeymoon plans. Oh and apparently quitting your job and then jetting off where they can’t reach you is a lot of work! Maybe I should unfriend colleagues on Facebook …..
Found this on io9. I can’t believe this is a thesis project, it is incredible. This would totally work on me, I do believe that something could be deadly adorable. Heck, my message tone is “It’s so fluffy I’m gonna die”. Same principle.
Big Bang Theory cracks me up. Great to see that they make themselves laugh too. In Kaley Cuoco’s defense, the Vulcan salute is really REALLY hard to do.
I’m in Adelaide this weekend for work. The faculty at our Madison Down Under course are incredible people and I love being able to see them even if its just once a year.
Hard to believe its only one month to the big day. Plans are well in order and I am so excited about what we have organised to celebrate our love. It’s been so much fun receiving RSVPs from our guests and putting final touches on the day.
It can be easy when you are so crazy busy with work and wedding to forget to appreciate each other. The love doesn’t change but when reality sets in you end up snapping about silly things. Surely we aren’t the only couple in this boat? Even if you have someone else doing all the work you don’t have nothing to do. Our suppliers are really more for on the day than in the lead up, which may be because we* have some strong ideas of how the day should look/run.
The next month will fly by in a flash. I hope when we are 80 we will look back on this time and smile. Before we start though, Richard I want you to guess how much I love you
*ok me, I am one with the strong ideas about how it should look. Richard has been incredibly supportive and has provided some wise counsel when what I want just can’t be made to fit into our budget.
Some people have way to much time. I hope this weekend you find time to do something others consider wasteful.
Locked in most of the honeymoon this week so we now turn our attention back to the wedding day itself. Its nearly here but I am happy with just how much is done, though our to do list is still pretty crazy we are now able to just play with the little details that make the day special.
We are off to celebrate Harrison’s 5th birthday this weekend. In that spirit we hope that perhaps one day Harrison will do something just as cool for his future self.
Its been quite the week both at work and play so I’m very glad that it’s Friday. Looking forward to getting started on Christmas crafts this weekend.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made
I don’t remember ever hearing the passage before and the first time I watched the video above I thought it was a poem the writers had imagined. Read the full passage Psalm 139. I have watched this a few times lately when things were getting me down and found it reassuring.
