Elizabeth and Philip: 65 years of marriage

HRH Princess Elizabeth married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey.

Remembering that 1947 was just 2 short years after World War 2 the wedding was a fantastic mix. A dress funded by clothing ration coupons accessorized by some incredible family heirlooms this was one dress to cheer a nation.

65 years of marriage is an incredible achievement. I mean really think about your own relationship and all that has gone down in that period. Now lets add in some extra challenges:

  • the death of your father when you were away
  • becoming Queen of England at 28 (which unlike Princes Charles and William was not always the plan)
  • four children
  • working with Prime Ministers like Sir Winston Churchill (her very first PM), Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair
  • the changing face of the British Commonwealth (no longer Empire)
  • IRA bombings
  • Diana and Fergie
  • wars (some of which your children/grandchildren fought in)
  • losing your mum and sister within a month of each other
Gosh! After only 6 years together I have come to rely on the support and love I get from Richard. 65 years would only add to that I think.

This video makes me smile, just listening to the news coverage is so strange. Definitley not the same as the coverage of the 2011 royal wedding that is for sure.

Congratulations to the royal couple on their anniversary. I hope you have a great day together planned – I hope Richard and I are still playing MMO’s when we celebrate 65 years of marriage (although I will be 96 so we will see).

In an aside I adore the UK royal bridal tradition to place your bouquet on the Tomb of the Unknown Solider at Westminster Abbey. The Queen Mother started the tradition in 1923 and the Duchess of Cambridge kept the tradition going in 2011.

Ladies You Look Amazing: Jubilee Style

The Thames River Pageant looked amazing and our royal ladies were on fine show. Photos are all from Hello Magazine.

I really hope I have even some of Queen Elizabeth’s style when I am in my 80s.

This dress is incredible, Alexander McQueen you did it again. I like this version a lot better than Kim Kardashian’s. Nude heels are genius!

Not everyone can pull off that hat but I think the Duchess in Cornwall rocks it.

Princes William and Harry don’t scrub up bad either.

I will be honest, there is a part of me that wishes we were there. I can’t imagine what a city like London celebrating would be like and one day I hope to see it. Can’t wait to see what else these stylish ladies wear over the rest of the week.

Happy Friday!

Just hoping that this weekend neither of us have to work. Doesn’t sound like much to ask but it sort of is at the moment.

A few blogs I follow have linked to this article. I figured that was the universe telling me to read it. Now I think you should too – heartbreaking and inspiring.

OMG! You can actually get married at Disneyland!

Speaking of Disney a little while back I posted about Disney Princesses as cover girls, well here is the update

TRH Duke and Duchess of Cambridge continue using the insane amount of media attention they get to do their part for those in need with a visit to Denmark hosted by TRH Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark

HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip have been in Australia this week, wish I’d gone to see her in Sydney but hope colleagues in Perth enjoy the public holiday

Photo taken by Richard on his lunchbreak recently from Milsons Point. I used to work in MP as well and remember the view well.
